Metalsmithing at Artascope!

Our Summer Artist Series Session just started! One class we love to pop in with is the Wednesday evening Metalsmithing class.

Many of the students in this class have been working with the teacher, Clint Fulkerson, and each other, for well over a year. It has been great addition to our Artist Series line up! New students also have enjoyed joining the class and getting lots of different perspectives of what they can do in the medium!

From learning the basics of metalsmithing with ring making, stone setting and other techniques, students are able to grow and expand their skills. Students in the class, like Kelley and Gretchen love making jewelry, whether it be pendants or rings. Sheri’s ring is beautiful and is one of her earlier projects! Jim often makes jewerly items as well, but also explore more scuptural elements of metalsmithing.

Whether you are curious, need a refreshed or a teacher’s guidance to pull together your inspirations, Metalsmithing at Artascope is HOT!

Our Summer Session runs until the end of August. Starting up September 16th, Clint will again be teaching Metalsmithing on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9pm! Clint will also be teaching in our ArtEscape! workshop format, these are three day weekend intensives.

Cape Family Fun Day

This past Saturday, Suzanne packed up the Studio suitcase and headed over into Cape Elizabeth for the annual festivities of Cape Family Fun Day!

The weather was gorgeous, sunny, slight breeze and Suz was grateful to be in the shade! There was even a sailboat race off in the waters, that made for a great view!

To be a part of Cape Family Fun Day, Artascope Studios provided a FREE and fun make and take, mini workshop! Hammered Metal Jewlery is one of our most popular Art Night Out™ workshops for both adults and kids, so we brought in on the road!

Pre-shaped wire hearts, trees and spirals of silver plate and brass wire decorate the table, alongside steel hammering plates and a selection of hammers. With a quick demonstration, anyone and everyone could make a hammered metal pendant!

Suz was excited to have so many folks join her at the make and take! Daughters brought over their friends and moms. Even players from the little league team enjoyed the activity.

We were thrilled to join in the Cape festivities while out having some fun with our neighbors! It was great to see so many familiar faces! And it was our first opportunity to hand out out HOT new Summer ‘09 schedule! To check it out, visit our website!

Stained Glass Workshops for Everyone!

Over the past couple of weeks, folks have been signing up for Stained Glass like crazy!  Gayle is a phenomenally talented teacher, who had been teaching with us for years, that we totally understand why people just can’t get enough of Gayle!  She always goes above and beyond for students in her classes!

We had Lorrie and Alex join us for an ArtEscape! Weekend to explore and develop their stained glass skills!  Lorrie had found several items that had belonged to her father, and they inspired her to sign up for the weekend.  Her friend, Alex, joined right in, ready for her own exploration into Stained Glass

The gals definitely had a blast with Gayle as they worked from patters and dove into our collection of glass shard and sheets to find the perfect colors to complete their pieces.  Lorrie made a beautiful seascape wreath and Alex was inspired by a sunrise design!  They worked intensely over their weekend!  We were so proud of their results!

Lorrie enjoyed her weekend with us so much that she, “wanted to say thank you for all the support this past weekend as Alex & I learned a lot in our introduction to stained glass.”

And just the other night, Gayle returned for more Stained Glass, this time as an Art Night Out, one night all inclusive workshops where participants designed their own stunning Stained Glass Panels!

It was a fun group, mixed with a husband and wife enjoying a night to themselves, a mother and daughter for a surprise Mother’s Day treat, an fellow Artascope teacher, and some new Artascope friends!  The guys in the class were able to quickly find their inspiration and complete beautiful panels that blew everyone away.  The folks that came with people they knew were fun to watch as they inspired each other throughout the class to design their own fabulous stained glass panels!

Looking to learn about Stained Glass?  Gayle will be teaching a 6 week Artist Series starting next week.  May 6 through June 10th from 10am to 1pm.  Looking for just a taste?  Our next Stained Glass Art Night Out will be offered Saturday May 9th from 2 to 6pm.

Spring Inspires MORE Decorative Painting Fun!

Last Saturday, a fabulously fun group of women joined us for an afternoon of Decorative Painting!

Our resident Decorative Painting Artist, Libby Barrett, shared her day, designs, colors and eye!  These women took advantage of our Private Party Special, and treated the birthday girl to a free workshop!  These gals got together intending to make colorful placemats, but several of them, loved their designs so much, that they decided to NOT quarter their piece of canvas! They were able to create these beautiful works of art and REALLY let their different personalities shine at the Studio, as well as in their masterpieces!

Interested in learning some Decorative Painting techniques?  Join Libby for an all-inclusive Art Night Out™ workshop transforming simple wooden bowls into stunning fruit or candy bowls on Monday May 18th from 6 to 9pm!  $45 all materials included

Artascope Teacher Highlight-Clint Fulkerson

Clint Fulkerson is our newest Artascope teacher. We are so grateful to have an innovative, talented metalsmith and artist working in our jewerly studio along side our other talented staff. Clint just kicked off his first Artist Fall Metalsmith Series on Wednesday nights starting last Wednesday the 17th. We expect great things from his students and will be sure to showcase their jewelry when finished.

So how about a little history on this talented artist: Clint Fulkerson is a Portland native who spent his childhood playing video games, making labyrinths for his hamsters, building model ships, teaching his brother how to draw in exchange for Kung Fu lessons, and pondering the true colors of dinosaurs.

During High School, he experimented using pen and ink, pastels, watercolor, acrylic paints, and ceramics. He took oil painting classes on Saturdays at Maine College of Art. In his Senior year, Clint was chosen to attend Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, where he tried cyanotype printing and steel forging. He went to Massachusetts College of Art intending to study illustration, but chose to study metalsmithing after seeing the tools and the incredible, small-scale objects students were making in the department. While at Mass Art, he also studied intaglio printing, black and white photography, glass casting, welding, website creation, and 3D computer modeling.

In Boston, he taught wax carving and lost-wax casting at Diablo Glass and Metal, and made jewelry from his studio there. He also worked at Haynes Flute Company casting flute parts in silver and gold, soldering, and managing inventory. In July of 2006, he and his wife Kate decided to move back to Portland, but first took a month long adventure in England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They had the opportunity to see a daunting amount of art, especially in London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

He currently has a studio in Portland. His drawings are in the Drawing Center’s viewing program and is represented in Portland by Four Walls Gallery. You can learn more about Clint and view some of his 2 dimensional work at http://www.clintart.com/. Private Parties at Artascope Studios- Hammered Metal Jewelry

Private parties are one of Artascope Studios specialities. We are always open to cater to personal events and create a fun environment for all types of events, from birthday parties to team building corporate parties.

We recently threw a fantastic appreciation party for Stegemann and Shuman Orthodontics’ entire staff. They filled up 0ur largest studios with sounds of hammering metal mixed in with a little laughter. Betina was able to lead our 17 guests through a fantastic demo using copper and silver wire to create new and exciting jewelry pieces. With Suzanne’s assistance and a little of my own, the entire cast of party goers went home with some very fabulous items to show off at work the follow week. What a great way to build bonds and show gratitude for your work family.

We are always open to talk about your upcoming event and we love to help guide you to explore all the class possibilities we have for parties in your future. We can offer parties for kids and adults alike. All we ask if for a time and class preference and 5 plus participants. The possibilities are endless!
